Delicious early summer berries!

Salmonberry is widely distributed in our area, which is excellent for anyone looking for a snack! These berries have long been an important food for Coast Salish people in June (June = pedstegwed – “Salmonberry time”). Berries are food for birds, small mammals, and bears, and flowers feed pollinators. In addition to berries, native people have long eaten young Salmonberry sprouts in spring. Salmonberry shrubs usually stay about 5 feet high, but can get up to about 10 feet.
